A Father-Daughter Tribute

Hello, just wanted to thank you and your wife for your show. While my father was sick and ultimately passing from bladder cancer, we would sit together and watch your show for hours. My dad was a retired Army Major who was a former advisor for the Royal Thai Army, a Viet Nam combat vet, and a top graduate of the U.S. Army Jungle School, where he earned a machete with a very awesome sheath and award which we have passed down to his nine year old grandson. He really enjoyed watching you both!
Thank you,
Lynne

Another Inspirational Story

Hello Captain,

It's been a while since our last conversation, and I wanted to let you know I have recovered from my 3rd spine surgery and adapted and overcome my disability. I was able to return back to duties along with full salary.  I want to thank you; in fact, I printed out your last email and posted it on my fridge and garage to not give up. You were my motivation and inspiration. I read it everyday, and it was hell going through all these surgeries, but I recovered slowly and went from not walking at all to walking with a walker to lifting weights, then doing 3 miles daily. I know I have come a long way, and every week that passes I am getting stronger both mentally and physically. I'm just waiting for my date to get back in my BDUs. Take care, sir, and God bless.

PS: I'm watching your show Lost Survivors--I love it, keep it coming!  Hope to meet you one of these days.

A Powerful Story of Self Renewal

Note from Hawke: We get notes, queries, and fan mail of all kinds--and we hope you understand that, as much as we'd like, the volume of it precludes us from responding individually to everyone...but every now and then we get a note like this one that resonates to the core and just have to share...

Hi Mykel,

First, let me say thank you for your service to our country!  I grew up a lot like you.  I was seen as nothing but poor white trash all my life and started believing it early in life.  I have struggled hard to make a life for my wife and three children who are now mostly grown up. We were very poor and growing in poor health; in fact I was supposed to be dead five years ago. I was so deep in anxiety, self doubt, and depression that I could barley function. Then I read your survival book, at the end of chapter ONE I was amazed with all the things my mind was putting together for me, and it had nothing to do with the wilderness, a tree, a rabbit or finding water or shelter! I applied all those things you talked about to LIFE and relationships and my future, and let the past die! I was amazed at all the Biblical concepts in your writings, and hope that they were intentional even though maybe covert?

Anyway It changed my life and gave me huge lasting energy that I had long ago lost, and the "never stop" understanding in life that I had shamefully surrendered, and a renewal of my Christian faith. I "made" my wife read it as well, (haha) and we started college from scratch. We finished our Associate degree at Catawba Valley Community College, our Bachelor of Science in religion degree from Liberty University, and are now halfway complete with Seminary and Masters of Religion and Biblical Studies degree.  Oh, we are still poor, but happy, and are looking for any opportunity to serve other people and give them hope and resources while serving and walking with our Lord and Savior. Thank you for your down to earth common sense and inspiration to move forward.

We grew up and live here in the rural foothills of NC and are now applying for positions as pastors all over the USA and hope to make a difference in the world around us. Again thank you for your service to our country and for inspiring me.

From a Couple of MWW Fans

Hi Mykel,

I've been meaning to send you a note for some time now and decided today is the day. I just wanted to say how your show Man Woman Wild has positively impacted my marriage. I'm a team leader with a local ground search and rescue organization and have a strong affinity for the outdoors, whereas my wife is more pop-culture orientated. After seeing Man Woman Wild, Mellissa connected with your relationship with Ruth; albeit I'm not as trained, I'm that "survival guy." Not long afterwards, Mellissa started go to the camp with the girls, and now she is the "chief fire lighter" and they get to the woods as often as they can. She even puts the dryer lint in a jar for tinder instead of thinking I'm weird every time I tell her "I need that for later." In short, good stuff, and thank you two for the time you both put into the show and the positive impact it had on our relationship today.

Some New Year's Inspiration

We received this note from a female fan and wanted to share:

I just wanted to say that I recently finished watching your series Man Woman Wild, and I really got a lot from it. I'm a 32 year-old woman from Eugene,OR. I'm fairly typical female and probably won't ever find myself in that kind of situation, but your show taught me a lot regardless. I find your survival tips fascinating and I will remember them because they were taught in such an engaging way. But more importantly I find myself using them in a more metaphorical way in how to approach life. I've recently gotten sober and its helped me remember to stay in the moment, access the situation, look at my resources and make a plan that best serves me. Your show also made me remember all our ancestors that have struggled so that we could have such privileged lives today. I also want to say that I would never have watched the show if it was a couple burly guys on it. Having a woman made it more relative and intriguing to me. And I appreciate that Ruth conveys the strength that a real woman has to offer. Thanks to both of you, and Happy New Year!
